California
  • Dear Autumn, Do Not Pass Us By   Everyone knows, it’s a trade off to live in Southern California. The near perfect weather trades hands with the impossibility of four seasons.  We get streets lined with palm trees with all of their handsome waves.  The rest of the country gets amber waves of leaves. I grew up knowing east coast Autumns like a […] Jenelle No responses September 20, 2014
  • Can Gentrification Be Redemptive? Today, a friend on Twitter posted what I thought was an excellent (and provocative) question: Without giving it much thought, I responded immediately. I realize I’m responding as one whose studies at Fuller have centered around culture (and, by translation, why Jesus teaches us to preserve and challenge culture in subversive ways within it.) I’m […] Jenelle No responses August 8, 2013
  • Summing up the Los Angeles Improv Scene; I Want to Go There. Last night I met up with Sarah Painter in Hollywood to see her improv teacher perform at the Upright Citizens Brigade. (See also: Amy Poehler, etc.) The show was called “Sentimental Lady: Guilty Pleasures” and was easily the best $7 I’ve spent in quite some time. Absolutely hilarious. Seven people play off of each other’s […] Jenelle No responses May 5, 2013
  • Inverno It is finally 50 degrees and rainy in Los Angeles today. It is our variation of January. And all of the misty fog and damp greys remind me of winters in Portugal where we’d all huddle near an electric heater with mugs of tea, waiting it out together. The pause that winter brings–when you actually […] Jenelle 2 responses January 30, 2011
  • Mt. Wilson is Holdin’ On! / Me on Newsweek Well, the Station Fire continues to burn, but the LA Times reports that 144,000 acres of flames is 38% contained.  This is huge.  Mount Wilson is amazingly still hanging on, thanks to the work of those firefighters: “We believe the results will be positive in the Mt. Wilson area,” said Incident Commander Mike Dietrich.   […] Jenelle One response September 3, 2009
  • Impressive Time Lapse Video [vimeo 6356422] By Dan B. Music by Brian Eno Also, here’s another crazy view (in time-lapse) from the Mt. Wilson tower cam. . Jenelle One response August 31, 2009
  • Hold on, Mt. Wilson! As of now, Mt. Wilson is still hanging on…amazingly.  Thank yous to the local firefighters and the Canadians who let us borrow some DC-10s that can drop 12,000 gallons of flame-killers in 8 seconds. The most recent news from the LA Times doesn’t look very hopeful, however. The LA Times aside, I’ve been pretty disappointed […] Jenelle 6 responses August 31, 2009
  • Time Lapses of Station Fire [vimeo 6335740] By Eric Spiegalman (found via: Adrienne on Twitter) [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8xB1c0cx58&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fkfiam640%2Ecom%2Fpages%2FMultimedia%2Ehtml%3Ffeed%3D337183%26article%3D5946016&feature=player_embedded] This time lapse from day to night is pretty intense with the LA skyline.  It just needs some better music. • Station Fire Expected to Burn 100,000 acres by Morning The Station Fire in the mountains of Pasadena is burning out of control and growing rapidly.  It has just been reported that two firefighters lost their lives in a vehicle accident near Mt. Gleason in the midst of being heroes.  Awful. The good news is that the Santa Ana winds are non-existent.  The bad news […] Jenelle 2 responses August 31, 2009
  • Overheard in a Pasadena Coffeeshop, 23:16 “My Mom got us free tickets to Disneyland.  I sound like a spoiled brat, but I don’t want to go.  I’m so not in Happy Land.” (Photo by ThomasFrederick) Jenelle 4 responses May 28, 2009
  • Things I (Definitely Do Not) Like: #911 I do not like the wildfires in California.  I particularly do not like the ones in Santa Barbara, as I have many loved ones there.  The Jesusita fire has picked up quite a bit since yesterday.  Yucky.  Particularly for the Westmont graduates who throw their caps in the air in three days.  And even more […] Jenelle One response May 6, 2009
