In a new city, I do not do anything very touristy, because that bores me. I sit with friends and drink coffee. I like it better that way.
Friday night we heard some local music at a club in the Mission. The band was smart to have an upright bass, and they call themselves The Cobalt Season. Their passionate vocals/guitar/piano/xylophone/accordion upheld my theory that husband and wife bands offer something unearthly in music. Must be all that oneness, you know.
Saturday night we went to Vespers with the Franciscan friars. I really like singing the Psalms, even if I can’t read music worth a lick. Afterward they served us good soup and nice bread, and we all talked about the monastic life. We heard that soon in Berkeley, another bunch of Franciscans will soon be doing a full-on experimental Sufjan Stevens eucharist liturgy! In truth, there was one young friar who was fascinating and really ought give up his vow to celibacy.
I would like to live out a Rule of Life with a community of people who’ll make sure I really live it.
So I randomly heard of The Cobalt Season last night…and then you mentioned them and I know I need to check them out.
Suggestions?
hey lady,
I changed the link to the band’s website above. If you click on that you can quickly stream some of their stuff, and they also have some free downloads on their “music” tab.
Hey – I’m with you on that avoiding touristy stuff. I like doing what the locals do…whatever that may be.
And that coffee looks goood.
Agent B,
That coffee was goood. Made me feel like I was in Italy again. It was in SF’s Little Italy, but at a French place, ironically.
oh my goodness! that coffee and that pastry both look so good and i am so hungry!
franciscan friars doing sufjan-shaped liturgical stuff… could this happen any place other that the city?
and speaking of young friars, do you remember nacho’s song about wanting to “break our vows together” ??
oh my!
Did we meet?
Ryan,
I don’t think so, because we peaced-out right when your set was over. Thanks for the good tunes, though.
whoa, nelly…you make me blush.
