It is finals week. Last night I shoved aside my papers and went down to see Explosions in the Sky play the Wiltern. It was clearly one of the top 5 shows I’ve ever seen. You’d think that a five-piece instrumental (post?) rock band would fantastically bore one to tears. But last night these soft-spoken Austin-boys stunned the whole place without words.
Their music is like eating an icy popsicle of hope in the middle of a crashing lightning storm. (You remember.) Those days when the summer storms were so thundering that it felt better to have your Daddy standing close by.
Their drummer is really into heart-beats and marching tempos. (I get a kick out of that.) I have a lot of memories attached to these songs, as they followed me from Portugal and back to the United States. I think I associate Explosions in the Sky with celebrating solitude.
I felt like I was on holy ground last night. I closed my eyes a lot and accidentally smiled at God. We remembered things.
what a wonderful way to describe Explosions! “celebrating solitude” seems the perfect description… wish I could have been there!
Reading this rendition of a concert I too enjoyed makes me think two things:
1) I wish I hadn’t been moved to sleep (as I was so beyond relaxed and soothed of course) and…
2) I now treasure their music even more.
