Wed, 26 May 2010 12:36:00 -0700 NEWS: Facebook to "Make Control Simple" in Privacy Settings http://jenelledalessandro.com/news-facebook-to-make-control-simple-in-priva http://jenelledalessandro.com/news-facebook-to-make-control-simple-in-priva

Mark Zuckerberg has made an announcement at a live event at Facebook headquarters that they will soon implement slightly new privacy settings in response to public outcry.

Zuckerberg writes on the Official Facebook Blog:

Today we're starting to roll out some changes that will make all of these controls a lot simpler. We've focused on three things: a single control for your content, more powerful controls for your basic information and an easy control to turn off all applications.

While it appears the default privacy setting will remain "opt-in," there will be some changes.

Mashable.com summarizes:

1. One simple control for changing content viewing permissions to friends-only, friends-of-friends, or everyone — it applies to everything you’ve published on Facebook in the past. This setting will also apply to everything you publish in the future.
2. A simple way for determining how people can find you on Facebook, and what users that aren’t your friend can see.
3. A simple way for turning off the Facebook Platform, specifically, being able to opt-out of Facebook’s new instant personalization features and providing third-party sites with information.
4. A way to opt-out of sharing your friends list and the Pages that you like.

Three cheers for simplicity.  As the new settings go live over the next few weeks, let's see those simplicity controls in action.  I certainly am tired of swimming through a myriad of un-checked privacy settings on Facebook.

Tue, 25 May 2010 14:57:00 -0700 WeReward Launches for the iPhone [Everybody Hug Your GPS] http://jenelledalessandro.com/wereward-launches-for-the-iphone-everybody-hu http://jenelledalessandro.com/wereward-launches-for-the-iphone-everybody-hu

Yesterday was another big day for Location-based Social Networking as WeReward was launched. You can be sure this new network has caught my attention.

Picture_12

WeReward allows you to check-in at locations and earn cash rewards.  It links to your Foursquare, Facebook, and Twitter and deposits your earnings to your Paypal.

From LYDIA DISHMAN's Fast Company article:

"Let's Get Physical: WeReward, Loopt, Others Push Users Into Real Stores"

Launching today, WeRewards tapped location-based technologies and social media platforms to spawn a hybrid ad model that aims to transform the way we use the Internet. Harnessing some of the same principles, Loopt, Scvngr, and Foursquare all have similar rewards programs or are about to launch them. Never mind the discovery and sharing online. The future of the Web -- at least a big slice of it -- is physical. And these companies are ready to start the transformation.

I couldn't agree with Lydia more.  Everybody should hug their GPS.  Location-based networking is certainly the future of the real time web.

If you start using WeRewards do let us know what you think of it.

Mon, 24 May 2010 20:03:00 -0700 In the Last Month or So...I Set Out the Welcome Mat to Foursquare http://jenelledalessandro.com/in-the-last-month-or-soi-set-out-the-welcome http://jenelledalessandro.com/in-the-last-month-or-soi-set-out-the-welcome

In the last month or so I've been as happy as a clam working with a variety of new clients and projects.

My team won the golf tournament for Africa's Wild Hope International, one of my favorite non-profits in the world.

In the last month I also worked for about a week in a city that is a music/coffee-lover's, social media fanatic's, and bicyclista's cinema paradiso: Austin.

You might also like to know that I've let Foursquare back into my heart.

There was a period of time following the Austin excursion (and it's requisite SXSW 2010 residue on Twitter) when I felt I ought to be a Gowalla purist.  Mostly because Foursquare's User Interface is ugly as sin.

And it's not just because Foursquare and Starbucks have just launched their Frappaci-Mayor-specials.  (Starbucks finally getting onboard seemed a bit overdue and anti-climactic, in my book.)  I decided it is simply silly for me to ignore a service that is adding 15,000 users each day.  Hello!

This last month I also had the chance to fly to Seattle for Storyville Coffee Roaster's weekend of cool.  You will be hearing more about Storyville, I promise.  They are a premier coffee roaster with a heart.  Their goal as they grow is to Give Away $1 Billion to End Human Slavery.  (Did you know there are more than 21 million slaves in the world today?  This must end in our lifetime.)  Storyville also has one of the most lovely and hopeful logo designs I've ever encountered: the "Fly-boy."  Here it is in life-size as I caught it.

Raise your hand if you're ready to replace your laptop with the iPad...anyone?

No, I did not procure a new iPad.  Yes, I would like to have one, but I'd much rather wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation when it will have more Jetsons-era bling.

Still, there are a few things I find to be some of the more compelling new uses for the iPad, if it continues to grow in usage:

The iPad massaging a tablet revolution in replacing textbooks in higher education.

Companies innovating as Hyundai has, finding clever ways to market their product with the iPad's help.

Today while heaps of early-adopters were either waiting in line at Apple stores or waiting for the UPS Santa Claus Truck, others were celebrating life with a massive public pillow fight.

That's right.  Today was International Pillow Fight Day.  And I missed it.

It seems that the kids in Cologne had the most fun.  Flash mob + Pillow Fight = Awesome.

In a round-up of somewhat unimpressive April Fools pranks around the web, Google's "Topeka" swap was mildly silly, while Starbucks' new drink size roll-out was one micra-step closer to entertaining.

The interwebs seem altogether smarter, more witty, and more capable than this.  It seems this April Fools Day has a case of the borings.  Where's Mr. T. when you need him?

Wed, 31 Mar 2010 23:41:00 -0700 David Pogue on the iPad. Twice. http://jenelledalessandro.com/david-pogue-on-the-ipad-twice-tags-ipad-apple http://jenelledalessandro.com/david-pogue-on-the-ipad-twice-tags-ipad-apple

The NY Times' David Pogue has just written a clever review of the iPad from two separate angles: (1) techies of nerdcore geekdom, and (2) everyone else:

"The haters tend to be techies; the fans tend to be regular people. Therefore, no single write-up can serve both readerships adequately. There’s but one solution: Write separate reviews for these two audiences."

In Pogue's classic style, he's summed up the debate with somewhat biting wit.  Techies hate the iPad's impracticalities (and lack of Flash), but love its fast processor.  Everyone else is (basically) consumed with wonder about how the iPad apps will change the experience of digital media.

His conclusion?

"If you like the concept, you’ll love the machine.  The only question is: Do you like the concept?"

Wed, 31 Mar 2010 12:43:43 -0700 iPad Mania http://jenelledalessandro.com/ipad-mania-3 http://jenelledalessandro.com/ipad-mania-3
Time will tell whether or not the iPad is Apple's "next Goldrush," but in the meantime Gigaom has released an interesting infographic that is worth a glance.  Apple's (AAPL) record-high stock prices yesterday seem to indicate that expectation is brimming for the new gadget to be the next Golden Girl/Boy.

If you are among the earliest of adopters and pre-ordered your iPad, you can start tracking your package from Apple's factory in Shenzhen, China.

And if you're a Curious George heading over to the Apple store this Saturday, be sure to check in with Gowalla while you're there.  You might win some free Twitter junk.

Tue, 30 Mar 2010 23:08:00 -0700 Real Conversation = The (Only) End Goal That Matters http://jenelledalessandro.com/holga-real-conversation-the-only-end-goal-tha http://jenelledalessandro.com/holga-real-conversation-the-only-end-goal-tha

Breck

I work with companies every day teaching them how to use Social Media to build community and create valuable connections.  For many of them, I am seeking to move them toward a paradigm shift in their marketing framework: Relationships matter.  Stop talking at people, and learn to listen.  Learn to truly listen.

I took this photograph with my beat up (and treasured) Holga.  It says something of what I am often trying to say with my work: Real conversations are truly the end goal.  We must learn to listen to each other.  And better.

Any eleven year old can tell the difference between contrived conversations and "real" ones.  Feign interest in a conversation with a tween and you'll lose them quicker than an eye can roll.   Good parents stop to listen to their kids, even when it is uncomfortable or inconvenient.  It is no different in business.

Companies that can make this fundamental shift toward valuing authentic conversation will be those whose bottom line consistently shifts toward profitability.  Non-profits that can can make this shift will jump out of their dying-lifecycle and the organizational dynamics that keep them pinned toward a poverty mentality.  They will begin learning from those they seek to serve.  They will grow more comfortable with change; they will grow.

Twittter and other social networks excites me to the extent that I am able to meet, connect, and share with my real-time "stream" of contacts.  What about you?  The real-time web will continue to translate into offline coffees, lunches, and handshakes, but only for those willing to take conversations seriously.

(Holga: Darrelle, David / Breckenridge / September 2010)

Once upon a time in my university days, I wrote a semester-long paper on how "IM speak" was changing our English language.  Srsly, u remember all those times when ur Instant-Messaging chat lingo slipped in2 ur academic and/or professional life.  Accidentally.

I did some case-studies of how IM speak was sneaking into our vocabulary like a thief in the night, often embarrassing the snot out of people.  It's the beauty (ugly?) of the missed code-switching opportunity.  It happens to the best of us.

The paper is now almost 10 years old, but I keep meaning to resurrect it for publishing.  Dust it off, renovate, breathe new Twitter words into it.  If you would like to collaborate with me on that project, do let me know.  I would like that.

I just keep finding fresh fodder for its halls of consideration...

Gowalla

Let it be known: I am a Gowalla girl.  I tried Foursquare for awhile and tried to pretend I enjoyed it.  I didn't.  The lure of becoming a Mayor sounded kind of interesting.  I checked into a few places while I was in Prague. I made a few To-Do lists. Ho-hum.

Then @DanPortnoy told me to just stop it and try @Gowalla.  Since Dan is a smart man, I listened.

Gowalla has quickly become my favorite iPhone app.  I use it constantly.

If you're still deciding between Foursquare and Gowalla, here is a decent side-by-side comparison.

Llama

If you've ever been to the San Diego Zoo, you've likely walked by the Wall of Animal Profile Pics engraved into stone. Ok, it's not exactly a wall o' profile pics, but that's how I saw it as we made our way to the lion's den.

I found the Llama's avatar to be the leader of the pack.  Those intense eyes make it look like a Phoenician king.  That Large Headed Llama jumped out to me as if to say, "Photograph me, young human."  So I did.

If you're living on any Social Media network, your profile photo matters.  Does it stand out among a pack of other llamas, bears, and ligers?
